Wardrobe 101 – The Leather Jacket

March 8, 2010
 Tichina Arnold

The leather jacket has long been a casual fashion statement. It’s a simple item that can be dressed up or down and turn ordinary into extraordinary. I’ve owned leather jackets since the late eighties when I was in junior high and wanted to have the tough yet chic look. The leather jacket effortlessly takes you from day to night with little effort.

Wardrobe 101: Draping

November 2, 2009
draping,fashion fashion tips
It’s all about the draping.

Draping in fashion has been around for centuries. From togas to sarongs, the draping method has created a series of looks that are downright sensual as they are unique. The use of extra fabric helps create a draped look with little effort. The trend isn’t going anywhere any time soon either.

Draping showed up in several collections for the spring 2010 season. Dresses, coats, skirts, and tops dominated the runways. The use of more fabric in draping creates illusion and glamor. Designer Vivienne Westwood is a master of this type of design and includes it in her collections.

Draped garments are perfect for work or cocktail hour. I just bought a draped skirt from Zara for around $40 and it’s the perfect garment to wear with a simple blouse for day or with a dressier top for night. Donna Karan implements draping into many of her matte jersey dresses as does Marc Jacobs and Emanuel Ungaro. The key to great draping is to find something that fits your body style and makes you feel comfortable.

Wardrobe 101: The Trench Coat

October 23, 2009

Once worn as a style moniker for the weather conscious, the trench coat is no longer just for keeping out of the rain. They can serve as statement piece for the casual chic or evening glamour looks.

The origins of the trench coat date back to the early 1900s when French and British soldiers wore them during the First World War. Burberry and Acquascutum both claim they created the coat (Acquascutum maintains they invented it in 1850), a derivation of the heavy serge greatcoats warn by military personnel.

The trench coat has evolved into a classic wardrobe item, a status symbol of sorts because while they are ready available, not everyone has one. Burberry is known for their classic trench but London Fog and other designers have created their own versions as well, expanding on styles, fabric, and color. Magazine’s like Harper’s Bazaar and InStyle have hailed the trench coat as a mandatory outerwear piece for the “complete” wardrobe.

Simply put, the trench coat is a must-have for every Chocolate Fashionista.

Wardrobe 101 The Tote Bag

September 29, 2009

The tote bag is a wardrobe staple that everyone should have. What is a tote bag? It’s a bag or purse that is made to carry everything from your wallet to your books to your bikini–pretty much all of your everyday belongings. Most bags are made with interior pockets like the one shown at the left by Bottega Venetta. Now totes are made with compartments for cell phones, keys, and other items.

Thought the term tote which means to carry can be traced back to the 17th century but it was not used to describe bags until the early 1900s.

With it’s versatility and style, the tote bag can take you from work to the airplane runway all in one swoop.
