Style Tips: A is for Accessories

Can’t Live Without Them

 No fashionistas wardrobe is complete without accessories. Accessories are like the icing on a cake; you have to have them to make and outfit complete!

How do you choose accessories? Go for what you know and love. Buying what works for you is the key to successful accessorizing. Just because someone else is doing it doesn’t mean that you should do it too. You have to consider your individual style and personality to pull off an accessory appropriately.

For example, a classicist wouldn’t be caught dead in a pair of feather earrings a la bohemian style. She’s likely to stick to he classic pearls, diamond studs, or simple gold jewelry. What do you need in your accessory wardrobe? Here’s our list:

1. Shoes. From pumps to boots to flats to sandals. not wardrobe is complete without a nice assortment of footwear. For work and evening, make sure you have plenty of pumps. Peep-toe, square toe, round, and pointy. Pumps can make any outfit complete and they’re versatile. You can wear them with pants or dresses. 

2. Jewelry. First off, diamond studs. No fashionista goes without them. They’re perfect for formal events or casual affairs. And of course if you can’t get the real thing, an acceptable faux pair is just as chic. No one is really going to know the difference. Second, the statement necklace. Why? Because it’s a conversation piece and perfect when you don’t feel like making a lot of fuss over your accessories. the statement necklace will suffice.  Next there’s the cocktail ring. No longer just for cocktail hour, the cocktail ring is the accessory. Wear one and you’ll subject yourself to accessory envy. The bigger the better, with huge stones, bling, or intricate design, cocktail rings definitely make a statement.  For those lady like occasions, a strand of pearls says a lot without saying too much. Pearl necklaces are always elegant and give you a refined look. Very Diahann Carroll circa 1960s.  Lastly, no fuss cuffs. Slip them on your arm and you’re out the door. And you don’t even need help.

3. Belts. Our friends, the waist thinner and curve accentuates, belts can make ordinary extraordinary. Belts are great accents for those days when you want to go from frumpy to fabulous. I own animal print belts, sash’s, belts with hardware and bling. If your outfit is simple, a belt can give it can alter the look for the better. Invest in a thin, medium, and wide belt.
Brands we like: Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Fossil, and Calvin Klein.

4. Handbags. The must-have accessory for every woman. Handbags are the topping on a perfect outfit. Two great bags to have? A structured bag, not to big not too small, but one that can carry you from work and on to a flight for a quick getaway.  I love Francesco Biasia bags, they come in a ton of styles and colors. The clutch is is the sassy sister of the structured bag. She comes out to play women less is definitely more. Right now I’m loving those Tory Burch clutches. Clutches are very chic and you can find them in almost every color.
Other brands we like: Hype, Louis Vuitton, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Kooba, Burberry, and Aldo.

5. A timeless watch. Go for a high-quality classic metal in gold or stainless steel.
Brands we like: Anne Klein, Guess, Michael Kors, Rolex, Locman, and Seiko.

Just as fashion changes, your accessories should change as well. Trends are fine but avoid falling into the trend trap. Select accessories that will last for more than a season. Invest in quality pieces that can take your wardrobe to the next level. Don’t be afraid to splurge on quality or spend a couple of dollars on some fun pieces. Variety is the key to great accessories!

Fashion & Style News: Luxury Goods Are Still Selling

 Everybody loves a Louis Vuitton.

The recession isn’t stopping some luxury brands from raking in the cash. LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey) have seen significant improvement in the sales of their brands. March ended with about $6.2 million in sales $5.26 million during that time in 2009. In plain English, sales increased by 13%.


LVMH has seen dramatic increased in all of its business divisions including a 10% increased fashion and leather goods; 12% in perfumes and cosmetics; 13% in selective retailing; 20% in wines and spirits, and 34% in watches and jewelry.

Donna Karan and Marc Jacobs, who also fall under the LVMH umbrella saw an increase in sales as well, while Celine closed up shop at a few of their stores. Dior revenues reached nearly $250 million compared last year’s $221 million. Sometimes you just can’t keep a good brand down.

Fashion week saw gloves in the shows of some of the hottest designers including Yves Saint Laurent, Derek Lam, Carolina Herrera, Donna Karan and Prada. Rich leathers, cozy knits and jeweled gloves should make for a warm and chic seasonal accessory.

Serena Williams looked quite chic in a black frock at the preview of Louis Vuitton’s 2010 Resort collection at the Louis Vuitton Lifestyle Shop in Saks Fifth Avenue in NYC. We know Serena Williams can be hit or miss sometimes with her fashion choices but lately she’s been on point. And it doesn’t hurt to have a handsome man like Common around either.

Fashion & Style News: Louis Vuitton Opens Flagship in Dallas

Louis Vuitton is showing Dallas how its done. The luxury retailer just opened its first flagship store in Northpark Centre (my favorite Dallas mall), the brand’s largest in the city. The store is also the first to carry watches, a good thing for those time conscious Dallasites who like to be on time for everything.

The Northpark store is one of three in the U.S. to feature the bronze sculpture “Suitcase in Exile” by Vincent Dubourg. The store faces the mall’s center garden, a serene setting in contrast to the parking lot that resided there just a few short years ago.

The store’s decor is worthy of praise, with Murano chandeliers, a two-story atrium, a shoe and bag salon and a handbag bar. (Cocktails anyone?) The rear atrium features a boutique with luggage, watches, and antique trunks. The store which opened on Tuesday is part of Louis Vuitton’s serious investment in the Dallas market. The brand renovated the 3,800 square foot store at the Dallas Galleria a little over a year ago.

Fashion & Style News: Naomi Campbell Collaborates with Marc Jacobs for Charity

Supermodel Naomi Campbell and Marc Jacobs are joining forces off the runway to generate charitable funds for the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood. Since 1999, the White Ribbon Alliance has dedicated itself to spreading international public awareness of the need to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all women and newborns. Campbell, whose ill-tempered antics often overshadow her goodwill deeds, currently serves as the Global Ambassador of the White Ribbon Alliance and does her best in making public efforts to spread awareness of this organization’s message.

Recently, Naomi Campbell made a special visit to the Louis Vuitton Paris showroom to choose a bag from its Spring/Summer 2010 Collection that will sell in retail stores to generate funds for the charity. The handbag selected by Campbell is a square-shaped bag made of soft, khaki, metallic leather with natural leather trim and is planned to retail for $2,789. In assisting Campbell with raising awareness of the surmounting occurrences of mortality during childbirth, Marc Jacobs has pledged to donate a portion of the sales to the White Ribbon Alliance.

Since being appointed the White Ribbon Alliance’s Global Ambassador in April of this year, Campbell has already begun making outstanding contributions to the organization. During this past summer, Naomi Campbell announced that she will be donating her pale, green alligator Hermes “Birkin” bag for a White Ribbon Alliance auction that will be held on November 10. However, keep in mind that Campbell is no stranger to raising funds for charity organizations. In 2005, Campbell created the Fashion for Relief charity foundation which is geared to providing aid for Hurricane Katrina victims. Every year, the top names in fashion, entertainment, music, and sports walk the catwalk in a charity fashion show to support this foundation.

Overall, Naomi Campbell’s collaboration with Marc Jacobs is sure to be a profitable fundraising effort for The White Ribbon Alliance. Consumers will be able to purchase this bag come March 2010 in Louis Vuitton retail stores across the world.

Fashion Week Paris: Louis Vuitton Spring 2010 Collection

Alas my favorite designer brand Louis Vuitton debuted their spring 2010 collection in Paris under the direction of Marc Jacobs. Denim, metallic, sporty, military, couture; Louis Vuitton has it all. Only one word could be used ot describe this collection–funky. And they even had the Afros to prove it.

Actress Zoe Saldana was seen in a black wool asymmetrical dress with a embroidered puff sleeve from the fall Louis Vuitton (but of course) line to their party Wednesday night. The luxury brand unveiled their new jewelry collection by Lorenz Baumer which included a 30.12 carat-flower cut diamond that would make Elizabeth Taylor blush. And this is why I love Louis Vuitton.
