Style Reads: Taraji P. Henson is June Essence Cover Girl

May 9, 2010
Essence is on the right path…

…For the moment. Maybe our complaints and gripes have finally been heard and it looks like Essence magazine has finally gotten the message: Variety is the spice of life.

The June issue is a drastic improvement, cover and content wise compared to the last several issues (April and May were great, February we really didn’t want to see Reggie “I Don’t Date Sistahs” Bush on the cover). As our only voice in glossy media for fashion, style, and beauty news, Essence will have to continue this formula if it is to withstand the era of social media.  It’s either change it up or go bust because black women have had it with the same old stories and same old stars.

Taraji P. Henson shines on the cover in a OMO Norma Kamali swimsuit, a Susanna Galanis agate necklace, and Dannijo rings.  The most noteworthy fashion editorial in this issue, Soft Focus features America’s  Next Top Model runner-up (Cycle 3) Yaya in fashions of the blush variety, including a lavender Burberry trench coat, a really pretty J. Crew sequined silk dress and a draped beauty of a dress by Sophia Kokosalaki.

Divas is a celebration of our hottest female entertainers like Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, and Diana Ross. Single Man of the Month Kwame Boachie-Adeji from New York is some good eye candy, and Daddy’s Home article is definitely worth a look.

Style Reads: Zoe Saldana Gives Essence a New Look

March 11, 2010

Well, almost! Readers will be excited to see a new face on the April issue of Essence. Actress Zoe Saldana (who has never appeared on the cover before) looks absolutely stunning. Photographed by Yu Tsai in a BCBG top and J. Brand jeans, the beautiful startlet dishes the dirt on everything from A to Zoe!

EXCERPTS:

ON SEX: “Love it, love it, love it—can’t live without it! I love sex. I love skin. I don’t believe the body is something to hide. I think in American society we’re messing up our kids by taking away the education on awareness of sexuality and replacing it with violence, guns, and video games—we’re breeding little criminals.

ON LOVE: “Love is a birthright.”

“Power can be an amazing tool or a deadly weapon…”–Zoe Saldana

Look for Zoe in the upcoming movie Takers alongside Idris Elba, T.I. and Michael Ealy. To read more of the Avatar star’s engaging interview at Essence.com click here

Entertainment: Jessica Says T.O. Show a No

September 8, 2009

Supermodel Jessica White explains how she almost ruined her career and rep appearing on The T.O. Show alongside the attention-hogging Buffalo Bill Terrell Owens and his “publicists”.

The leggy Buffalo, New York native who has appeared in Victoria’s Secret catalogs, in numerous fashion shows, and most recently in Maybelline ads is not the floozy she was portrayed as on the low-rated reality show.

Who can forget her infamous line “Google me,” when Kita and Mo asked her who she was? Classic, almost as good as Sheree Whitfield’s, “Who gone check me boo?” line to the party planner.
