Beauty: Coach Introduces it’s New Girl Poppy

 Coach’s New Girl Gets it Poppy!
Set to launch in July, Coach’s new fragrance Poppy is set to solidify the brands fragrance portfolio this summer. Poppy will be the first Coach fragrance to launch in department and specialty stores. Traditionally Coach fragrances have been sold in their stores, thus creating a smaller market for sales. 

Poppy will head straight to stores including Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Macy’s and Sephora in July. The fruity blend has top notes of bright cucumber flower petals, juicy mandarin and bright baby freesia buds. At the heart is a blend of petally jasmine, pink water lily, Southern gardenia and crème brûlée. The drydown is a mix of  cedarwood, bleached sandalwood, lush vanilla and whipped marshmallow.

Poppy will retail for $60 for a 1.7 ounce eau de parfum bottle, $38 for a purse spray, and $35 for a 5 ounce body lotion.

Beauty: Vaseline Cocoa Butter Vitalizing Gel Body Oil – Product Review

A major concern with black skin is always to find products that combat dryness. For years I avoided Vaseline products because none of their lotions worked on my skin. Well times have changed and they’ve seen the light. Their luscious Cocoa Butter Vitalizing Gel Body Oil is an intense moisturizing dessert for skin.

Infused with Brazilian nut oil, almond oil and cocoa butter, the gel goes on smooth not stick or greasy like you might think. Apply it fresh out of the shower and it absorbs right into the skin without leaving a flaky or dray appearance minutes after.

The Cocoa Butter Vitalizing Gel Body Oil also has a light scent, so it’s perfect for wearing underneath your favorite fragrance. I’m sensing there’s a drop of vanilla in there too because men seem to like this scent. A guy actually turned me on to it and I’ve been using it ever since.

6.8 ounces will run you about $7 and some change.

Beauty: Calvin Klein’s New Beauty

 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Calvin Klein, the man behind some of the most popular fragrances in the world is introducing his latest scent, Beauty. The fragrance, which will make its formal debut in October will is deemed to be the scent for the Calvin Klein collection.

Unlike the brand’s hot sellers like Euphoria (my favorite) and Obsession, Beauty will be presented as a timeless classic. It’s advertising is even a little more subtle than the previous Calvin Klein fragrance ads. The spokesmodel Diane Kruger will appear in ads fully-clothed.

Coty Prestige, who holds the license for the fragrance is targeting the scent toward a more upscale audience. The company wanted a luxurious fragrance with global appeal. The success of Euphoria will give Beauty a run for the money. The scent was largely successful nationally and globally.  A striking concoction of ambrette seeds, heart of jasmine and a drydown of cedarwood make up the Beauty scent.

Beauty will be available in three sizes:  1 oz. for $50, 1.7 oz. for $65 and 3.4 oz. for $85. A 200-ml. bath and shower creme will retail for $34, while the same size body lotion will go for $42. The egg shaped bottle is made of glass and encased in a metallic silver shell.  The packaging will have a glossy white finish with a silver halo. The scent will be sold in about 2,500 department and specialty stores nationwide, globally, in about 80 markets.

 Tracy Mourning, wife of former NBA star Alonzo Mourning introduced her new body moisturizing collection, Goddess, Mother, Soul Mate, Friend at Georgia in New York City. The collection is an extension of Mourning’s Honey Child t-shirt collection.  Goddess , Mother, Soul Mate, Friend  has four unique blends made up of natural and essential oils and includes lotions, creams, cleansers, perfume oils, and scrubs.

Beauty: Essie Finds New Home at L’Oreal

Essie nail polish can finally go global. The company has sealed a deal L’Oreal to increase the brand’s awareness and expand. Essie is quite popular, among the chic set, choosing quirky names like Turquoise & Caicos, Show Me the Ring (see inset photo), Below the Belt and Sugar Daddy. 

L’Oreal’s already strong presence in salon network distribution will be a driving force behind the Essie brand. Expansion initiatives may eventually include mass retail or masstige markets. If their expansion is as elaborate as the color collections, we can expect to see big things from Essie

Beauty: Avon Adds Keri Hilson to Beauty Roster

 True beauty always shines.

The beautiful and talented singer/songwriter Keri Hilson has been called by beauty giant Avon to appear in ads as their new spokesperson. Hilson was seen frequently at runway during fashion week and will replace Jennifer Hudson in a series of advertisements for the Imari fragrance.

Avon has used as number of celebs for its advertising campaigns including Zoe Saldana who is the face of the Eternal Magic fragrance. With Hilson, Avon is hoping to tap a younger, fresher market. It will be the first endorsement deal for Hilson who is set to do partake in a a two-day photo shoot at Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers with newly acquired celebrity makeup artist Paul Innis. The photos will debut in an upcoming Avon catalogue.

Hilson is back in the studio working on her second album, due out later this year.

Beauty: Kate Spade’s Twirl

Kate Spade New York is introducing a second women’s fragrance this fall. Twirl, set to hit stores in September, captures the spirit of the Kate Spade consumer, the woman who loathes boredom is isn’t too fussy. Although the brand was initially known for its handbags, consumers have viewed Kate Spade as a lifestyle brand. The company continues to live up to those expectations.

The brand now includes clothing, accessories, shoes, jewelry, eyewear, fragrances and home goods. The whimsical scent starts with a mix of blackberry, pink watermelon and red currant; followed by orange blossom, star jasmine, sweet magnolia, musk and French macaroon.

The fragrance will include eau de parfum in 1.7 oz. for $65 and a 3.4 oz. for $80, and a 0.25 oz. roller ball for $18.  A 5 oz. body cream will sell for for $45; a 6.7 oz. body lotion for $40 and a 6.7 oz. shower gel for $35. 

Twirl will be sold in approximately 1800 department and specialty stores.

Beauty: 5 Ways to Go Natural and Still Shine!

 I left my relaxer behind in 2002. Since then I embarked on a quest for healthier hair with more flexibility and style. For more than a decade I have watched my hair transform into a remarkable part of my being. With proper care and attention, I saw my texture go from kinky/curly to curly/wavy. The so-called “good hair” we strive for grows abundantly from my scalp. But I’m not one who subscribes to the “good hair” philosophy, all hair is good and if it isn’t, it can’t be. But first we have to stop masquerading our hair problems with chemicals, weaves, and braids and for once, let it breathe. Here’s how:

1. Leave the Weave. As visually appealing and sometimes, entertaining the weaves can be, they are hell on your hair. Whether you’re having them sewn-in or glued-on, you’re not giving your hair much room to breathe. And quite frankly, many of you have forgotten what your real hair (if you have any left) looks like.

2. Use natural products. I swear by Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile liquid soap. It’s old school, with no additives and fancy ingredients. It gives hair a clean feeling and comes in 8 different varieties. Using oils like jojoba, almond, and peanut on the hair are great for conditioning. Apple cider vinegar is great for for treating itchy scalp, hair loss and dandruff. For scalp treatments, try coconut and castor oil mixed with a few drops of rosemary, peppermint or sage essential oil for conditioning.

3. Get a boar…brush that is. Avoid plastic bristle brushes, they tend to snag the hair and cause breakage. Boar’s hair brushes are a lot safer and softer on hair. And go wide….Wide tooth combs help detangle hair and prevent snagging.

4. Turn down the temperature. I used to flat iron my hair every day, and the more I did it, the more it thinned and eventually broke off. Now I may use a flat iron once a month and the ends don’t split as much. Now when I want my hair straightened, I get a light press. Even though it’s still heat, it’s not as severe or damaging when it’s done on a smaller scale.

5. Get creative with your styling. I like how Miss Jessie’s provides online manuals for styling your hair with their products. You can do braid-outs or twist-outs and give your hair a funky look. Think variety when styling you’re hair and shoot for hairstyles with little manipulation.

Beauty: Kimora’s Dares You with Her New Fragrance

That fabulous chick Kimora Lee Simmons is launching her fifth fragrance Dare Me. Dubbed a call to action for it’s wearers, Dare Me is a bold, vivacious scent, true to its namesake.

Top notes of magnolia and island coconut, as well as a heart of Southern honeysuckle and African white milkwood with a drydown of sandalwood and creme de musk finish off the scent. Ultimately the scent is fruity but not excessively so. (I just hope it’s better than this horrible cologne I’m smelling on this plane…Sorry y’all my senses are bleeding!)

Dare Me will be available at mass market retailers such as Walgreen’s, Target and Kohl’s. Young adults and twentysomethings will be fond of this scent, and the price point will be just right for those budgets.  The 1 oz. bottle will ell for $28 while the 15ml will go for $17 and the travel size for $17.99.

June will kick-off Dare Me advertising initiatives with print ads running in beauty and lifestyle magazines.
